Did you know that beach cruisers were invented in 1976 and they were called 'California Beach Cruiser'?

Ah! Beach cruisers! They make riding at the beach easier and more fun. With their balloon tires and upright handlebars, they cut through the sand like little beach monsters. They’ll be single-speed or 3-speed but they come with coaster brakes. That means you have to pedal backward to sop the bicycles.

They aren’t designed to race down mountains, speed through traffic, or win races. Beach cruisers are all about comfort, elegance, and living life at a different pace of life. They feel amazing to ride on beaches and guess what? They’re cheaper than an equivalent road bike or mountain bike.

Convinced to try out one for yourself? Well, check out these options that have been vetted so that you can make an informed buying decision.

How To Choose The Right Beach Cruiser

Which beach cruiser is right for you? That’s a very good question. It’s a personal choice. Your personal preferences will help you make an informed decision. However, keep the following features in mind:

Category Details
Frames Generally made of steel for stability; some models use lighter aluminum. Not suitable for long-distance travel, climbing, or racing.
Tires Extra-wide or ‘balloon’ tires provide stability, are less likely to go flat, and are ideal for riding on boardwalks and firm sand.
Handlebars and Pedals Swept-back handlebars and forward-set pedals contribute to the classic upright riding position, promoting a relaxed experience.
Gears Traditional cruisers often have single gears; modern models may feature 3 or 7 gears for longer distances or commuting.
Brakes Most cruisers have coaster brakes – push back on the pedals to stop, providing an easy and stylish way to brake.
Saddles Wide, comfortable saddles with springs for a smooth and comfortable ride, suitable for absorbing road bumps.

Can Beach Cruiser Bikes Be Used For Commuting?

Yes, using a Beach Cruiser to commute is quite a good idea. Those big balloon tires, inherent stability, and ease of use make them an ideal bike for going to and from the office. One of the big bonuses is that because of the very nature of a Cruiser, you are less likely to show up to work all disheveled and sweaty.

Is There A Difference Between Men’s And Women’s Cruisers?

Yes, and also no. In practical terms, the only real difference between the two different styles is one of aesthetics. Women’s cruiser bikes have different curvatures in the upper frame and also be made from slimmer tubing. And that’s it. If you’re a boy or a girl and you like the look and feel of a bike built for either sex, then just go out and buy it.

Are Beach Cruisers Expensive?

No, they are not! For less than $300 you can pick up an absolutely fabulously stylish and practical bike that will serve you well for years. Most Beach Cruiser manufacturers also offer a free lifetime warranty for the frame; as in a forever warranty.

What Are Beach Cruiser Bikes Good For?

Beach cruiser bikes are good for relaxed casual rides.

What Are Beach Bikes Called?

Beach bikes are called cruiser bicycles.

Unlike most types of bikes, it isn’t necessarily… necessary… to get one from a dedicated bike shop. The clue is in the name. Beach Cruisers are designed for cruising, not for speed. So in this case, I would argue it’s ok to go ahead and get one online. Just make sure you know it’s going to fit before you buy.

There are many different types and makes of Beach Cruiser out there to choose from. I think you shouldn’t spend any more than $400 on one at the upper limit. Beach Cruisers are about taking things slowly. They’re about getting to where you want to go by traveling and arriving in style while relaxed.

  1. A great choice of bikes included in the article, but we must not forget what cycling is all about.
It is about enjoying and being in shape while enjoying. Nice post by the author.

  2. Hello – I’m producing a story on the history of the beach cruiser and would love to chat with someone about what they know. Let me know if someone is up for it.

  3. A single-speed two-wheeler is an affirmation that the joy of cycling is in just riding the bike. The riders who spend thousands on a bike and gear, but use it all only once every few months, are missing the point of riding. Most of us have memories from childhood of hopping on our Sears Free-Spirits or our black Huffys and riding all day with no particular place to go. Going one town over, eating a pizza, turning around, and getting back home before dark. Cannibalizing old bikes for parts when ours had had enough. Remembering a particularly hard tumble when you were trying to carry too much in your arms and you let the bike get the better of you. (That was me hitting the side of a neighbor’s house when I tried to take an armload of cassettes to my buddy’s house.) Jumping a ramp on a Huffy successfully when you were scared witless that you were going to break your neck on the landing. That’s riding a bike. Going 40 miles every few months atop a $1200 two-wheeler on a Saturday is not riding a bike, however. If you do that, I hope that you get yourself a low-tech, heavy bike for about $70 and have some fun again with it.
