Most of us have memories from childhood of hopping on our Sears Free-Spirits or our black Huffys and riding all day with no particular place to go. Going one town over, eating a pizza, turning around, and getting back home before dark. Cannibalizing old bikes for parts when ours had had enough. Remembering a particularly hard tumble when you were trying to carry too much in your arms and you let the bike get the better of you. (That was me hitting the side of a neighbor’s house when I tried to take an armload of cassettes to my buddy’s house.) Jumping a ramp on a Huffy successfully when you were scared witless that you were going to break your neck on the landing. That’s riding a bike. Going 40 miles every few months atop a $1200 two-wheeler on a Saturday is not riding a bike, however. If you do that, I hope that you get yourself a low-tech, heavy bike for about $70 and have some fun again with it.
