Biniam Giro Injury

Biniam Girmay made history yesterday by winning stage ten of the Giro d’Italia, and today he has withdrawn from the Italian Grand Tour following an eye injury that he pertained during the Podium celebrations from yesterday’s stage victory. As per his withdrawal, he will not be starting stage eleven of the Giro, this is truly a big loss, both for Girmay and the team.

Girmay was at an all-time high celebrating his amazing win, which made him the first black African rider to win a Grand Tour stage. As per the tradition, he was celebrating with the winner’s bottle of Prosecco when its cork struck his eye, and that is when he covered his eye in excruciating pain. Doctors from the team and the event rushed to him and that is when they took him to a hospital for further examination.

The worse actually happened when Intermarché confirmed that Biniam suffered eye injuries because of the incident and because of this he will not be able to continue the Italian Grand Tour. Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert’s team doctor, Piet Daneels shed some more light on Biniam’s injuries:

Following an incident on the podium, medical examinations revealed a haemorrhage in the anterior chamber of the left eye of Biniam Girmay.

His injury is evolving in the right direction and will be followed up by a medical team in the next days. In order to minimise the risk of expansion of the haemorrhage and the intraocular pressure, it is strongly recommended to avoid physical activity.

Our priority is a complete healing of the injury and that’s why we decided together with the rider and the sports direction that Biniam will not appear at the start of the eleventh stage.

Biniam and the team made the official announcement of his withdrawal in a video that was posted both on Instagram. He seemed high in spirits despite the fact that this is not the way he wanted his Italian Grand Tour journey to end, he still celebrated the win in his own peaceful way. He is content with the decision made, the team may have lost Biniam for the Grand Tour but this is surely not the last we will be seeing of him.
