NJ Transit is telling riders how bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and other personal vehicles can be brought onto trains, buses, and light rail vehicles as of Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The agency’s live guidance says riding or charging personal vehicles inside NJ Transit facilities or onboard vehicles is prohibited, while hoverboards, tandem bicycles, and gasoline-powered personal vehicles are banned on all NJ Transit vehicles.
For Icebike readers, the useful part is practical: if you combine a bike or e-bike with transit, you need to know whether your vehicle folds, whether the line has time restrictions, and whether staff can limit boarding when the vehicle creates a safety issue.
What the NJ Transit rules say
NJ Transit’s guidance covers bikes, e-bikes, electric scooters, Segways, scooters, and skateboards under its personal-vehicle rules. It says foldable personal vehicles must be folded before boarding any NJ Transit vehicle at any time of day. It also says riders cannot remove wheels from a non-folding bike and treat it as a folding bike.
On trains, folding personal vehicles are always permitted. Non-folding personal vehicles are allowed under line and time rules. The guidance lists weekday permission at all times on the Atlantic City Line, and on other rail lines from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. It restricts trains arriving in Hoboken, Newark, or New York from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and trains departing those terminals from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Weekend rules vary by line. NJ Transit says non-folding personal vehicles are allowed at all times on Raritan Valley, Gladstone, Montclair-Boonton, Main, Bergen County, Pascack Valley, Port Jervis, and Atlantic City Line trains. On NEC, NJCL, and Morristown trains, the agency lists permitted windows from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 9 a.m., with restrictions around New York travel from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Buses and light rail have separate limits
For buses, NJ Transit says folding personal vehicles are always permitted. Non-folding personal vehicles are allowed on buses with front bike racks or underfloor luggage compartments on a first-come, first-served basis. The agency says regular bikes and e-bikes are not allowed on the bicycle racks on buses traveling into New York City.
For light rail, NJ Transit says folding personal vehicles are always permitted. Non-folding personal vehicles can be carried from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays.
The agency also keeps a broad safety override. NJ Transit employees can limit personal vehicles onboard when vehicles are crowded or when the situation creates a safety concern. Passengers who do not follow the rules or staff directions can be removed from the system or face penalties.
What riders should do before boarding
If you ride a folding bike or folding e-bike, fold it before boarding and store it where it does not block other passengers. If you ride a standard bike or non-folding e-bike, check the line, time, and direction before you leave home. Peak-hour rules matter, especially around Hoboken, Newark, New York, and New York City-bound bus routes.
The safest reading is simple: walk the bike on platforms, keep batteries and vehicles powered down onboard, never charge inside the system, and leave room for accessibility needs. If the train or bus is crowded, staff discretion can decide whether you board with the vehicle.
