Remco Evenepoel Wins Best Young Rider’s Jersey At The Volta ao Algarve

“No, maybe [it affected] the first three or four, but I decided to stay around seventh or 10th position and for the sprint of course, then you cannot move up to first place,”
Evenpoel White Jersey Win

It is truly a rare thing when an athlete’s performance is immortalized, and Remco Evenepoel is one of those lucky ones. His last outing at the Alto da Fóia has been immortalized in the form of a statue on the summit, as a sign of achievement for all to come. His amazing skills also got him the white best young rider’s jersey at the Volta ao Algarve.

His stunning performance is even more impressive as the race was plagued by mishaps, even some crashes. During the race, Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma) and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) clashed furiously when the end was near but Evenepoel carefully ignored all of the ruckuses that were being caused. This incident had no significant impact on his performance and even his podium win.

After the race, Remco Evenepoel stated:

No, maybe [it affected] the first three or four, but I decided to stay around seventh or 10th position and for the sprint, of course, then you cannot move up to the first place. I was hoping just to arrive in the first group and that’s what I did today, so it was good.

Serra de Monchique looked great covered in darkness when Evenpoel was called on to the podium for the white jersey of the best young rider. As everyone was waiting for his teammate Fabio Jakobsen to finish, he went to the team’s bus and did a warm down on his bike.

Alto do Malhão will be hosting the amazing finale on Sunday and Remco Evenepoel will be going against a lot of tough riders like Daniel Martínez and Ethan Hayter from Ineos Grenadiers.

In an interview, Evenepoel stated:

I felt really good, I think it was the perfect sensation with the eyes on Saturday.

I felt really good all day. I knew from the beginning of the hard climbs that I probably would not be dropped today, so I feel really happy with the feeling. I was really happy about the legs. I hope I will have the same legs or even better legs on Saturday.

Stay tuned for more updates as we will be covering all of Evenepoel’s races this cycling season!
