Remco Evenepoel (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) gave his best on Tuesday’s stage 4 of 2022 Vuelta a España. Even though some important stages are still yet to come, Remco passed the initial test on 23rd August and now looks to score more in the upcoming stages. Despite not being able to finish in the top 3, he still managed to score seven seconds and also finished up in the first group.

His progress at the climb at  Laguardia shows great potential. Being able to finish alongside top names in the first pool is an achievement in itself. After crossing the finish line, Remco talked to the media and he came across as quite satisfied with his performance:

I lost some bonus seconds, but that’s part of riding a Grand Tour. All in all, it was a successful day

Even though Primoz Rogilic outshined everyone, but there was no doubt that Remco couldn’t handle an uphill climb like at the Basque. Moreover, he is performing really well in the hot temperature of Spain. This being the second Grand Tour of his career so far, he has astonished everyone with his level of dedication. On the other hand, his teammate Julian Alaphilippe managed to close in on the 20th spot.

Nevertheless, Remco acknowledged that taking on such climbs requires special strength. He said:

A one kilometre uphill is a very intensive, very specific effort and the kind that I haven’t done in training for a while,I had to be in the front to not lose time, and there was a small gap behind me. That’s the risk when it’s going so fast uphill.

Had he had a tiny bit more confidence in his sprint, the result charts could have been different. Remco told the news:

I did my own thing, and maybe I could have finished a few places higher up if I had had some more confidence in my sprint. But all in all: mission accomplished today.
