Hincapie and Wellmeier Win Junior Road Race Titles at Pro Road Nationals

USA Cycling says Enzo Hincapie and Sophia Wellmeier won the junior road race national titles on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the 2026 Pro Road National Championships in Charleston, West Virginia. The result matters beyond the podium because the junior races showed two different development paths: Hincapie won from a decisive road-race move, while Wellmeier won her first road race after coming from mountain biking.

The junior men’s field raced 101.5 kilometers over seven laps of a 14.5-kilometer circuit. USA Cycling said the Wertz Avenue climb repeatedly split the field before Hincapie bridged to the breakaway, attacked again, and finished 50 seconds ahead of the chasing group.

Hincapie, from Greenville, South Carolina, won ahead of Kaison Smith of Canton, Georgia, and Diego Duran of El Paso, Texas. USA Cycling attributed the race-winning move to Hincapie’s attack on the climb with three laps remaining and his second acceleration on the penultimate lap.

Wellmeier wins after a mountain-bike start

The junior women’s race covered 58 kilometers over four laps. USA Cycling said the field was reduced quickly, and the decisive group became Sophia Wellmeier of Corte Madera, California, and Liliana Edwards of Washington, D.C. With one lap left, Wellmeier made the winning move and crossed the line solo.

Wellmeier won ahead of Edwards, with Lily Nguyen of Brooklyn taking third. USA Cycling noted that Wellmeier usually races mountain bikes and described this as her first road race.

For young riders, the practical lesson is not that every mountain biker should jump into road nationals. It is that bike handling, climbing strength, and tactical patience can transfer across disciplines when the rider has the fitness and race craft to use them.

Why this matters for riders

Junior national championship results can be easy to treat as a development-team scoreboard, but they are also useful for regular riders watching how races are won. In both races, the decisive move came before the final sprint. Hincapie used the climb to separate the strongest riders, then attacked again. Wellmeier survived the early selection, then committed on the last lap.

That is a useful reminder for anyone learning racing or group riding: the winning moment is often not the finish line. It is the point where the ride becomes selective and the rider has enough control, fueling, and confidence to respond.

Icebike readers who are not racing can still take the same lesson into training. Build a reliable base, practice riding hills smoothly, and make sure the bike is set up before hard efforts. Start with a beginner cycling plan if the goal is consistency, and use a bike safety checklist before harder group rides.

What happens next

USA Cycling said the Pro Road National Championships continue in Charleston with under-23 road races on June 20 and elite road races on June 21. The junior road race titles are now decided, but the weekend still has more Stars and Stripes jerseys to award.
