The opening day of Volta a Catalunya saw some disastrous scenes unfold as Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) was hospitalized after collapsing during the stage 1 sprint. He then received emergency medical care after the finish line in Saint Feliu de Guixols.
This happened immediately after Michael Matthews won the stage, but all of the attention shifted to Colbrelli because of his medical condition.
