Caleb Ewan Drops Out Of Milan-San Remo Following Stomach Illness

"I am very disappointed that I am not able to start off my main goal of the spring season,"

Ewan Out Of Milan San Remo

Milan-San Remo is just around the corner, While Mathieu Van Der Poel is making a return for the event, it seems like Caleb Ewan will not be attending the event following an illness. He is not the only one though as Alpecin-Fenix and other teams have withdrawn many riders because of their prevailing medical situation.

Amongst these withdrawals, we can see some big names like Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) and even the reigning champion Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl). Let’s hope their condition gets better soon enough.

It is really a shame as we won’t see Ewan in action at this year’s Milan-San Remo as the Australian finished second in both 2018 and 2021, thus gaining a lot of experience, maybe this time he would have won?

Even Lotto Soudal was expecting Caleb Ewan to race in Milan-San Remo but by Friday his condition had worsened.

Ewan stated and described his sadness:

I am very disappointed that I am not able to start off my main goal of the spring season.

I was in good form and ready for a hard race, but like many other riders at the moment, I faced a stomach flu at the worst time. Together with the team we had to decide that it is better to now focus on different goals.

Caleb Ewan was also considered a top favorite for the event on Saturday alongside Wout Van Aert and Tadej Pogacar. Ewan is an accomplished and amazing sprinter, if he had participated, his chances of winning would have been a lot. With him not participating, Philippe Gilbert will be taking the team’s helm for Milan-San Remo.
