Jai Hindley Rests Ghosts Of Past As He Wins 2022 Giro d’Italia

“I’m really proud to be Australian, and I’m happy to take this one home.”

Jai Hindley Wins Giro

Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) just made history by winning the 2022 Giro d’Italia, this is the first Grand Tour win for him, his team and his country-Australia. His performance at this year’s edition is quite different than what we observed two years ago. Matteo Sobrero (BikeExchange-Jayco) won the time trial of the 21st stage but Hindley won the Giro!

Hindley carefully won the final time trial, toppling over every rival on the way. Rewinding back to two years ago, Jai lost the pink jersey on the final day of Giro d’Italia. Now he just made sure that mistake won’t be repeated again.

He made sure that Verona’s famous amphitheater would be witness to his glory, that is exactly what happened. Richard Carapaz was left behind but he also gave his all, although he finished at the 10th place he still put up quite a show. Carapaz did not want to give up his spot to Mikel Landa, he could not afford that possibility.

Due to his performance, Hindley has now conquered the final general classification with a gain of 1:18 over Richard Carapaz. They also shared the podium spot with Landa who took the podium spot after seven years. Hindley could not control his excitement after the finale, we could see it in his expressions:

It’s really incredible. I’m really proud to be Australian, and I’m happy to take this one home.

Hindley got the Giro but the stage victory belonged to none other than Sobrero, this was the first Grand Tour Victory of his young yet astonishing career. He was over the moon and could not control in his happiness. Only two riders could match up with his pace, Sobrero got to share the podium spot with Thymen Arensman (DSM) and Mathieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).

After the race, Sobrero expressed:

It’s an amazing feeling. I put the finish line on the top of the climb, said I’d give everything until there, then descend and whatever is left I give at the end.

The overall GC rankings remained unchanged as Hindley, Carapaz and Landa did not gave up their spots to anyone, they held onto it firmly. This was truly a memorable day for Bora-Hansgrohe and Jai Hindley!
