HED Ardennes Reviews

HED Ardennes wheel range is suited for a variety of terrain, including road, track and even gravel riding. The latest edition of this wheelset comes with a disc specific option. The Ardennes was the wheel that brought the wider rim profile to road cycling, so you can thank them for the increased comfort and grip you can now get from most sets of wheels.

Ardennes wheels are known for consistent braking power and balance. These wheels have C2 alloy rims, turbine braking tech, and are ready tubeless. Rim depths can be as much as 14.5mm. The HED turbine braking technology is impressive because it works in both dry and wet conditions. The rim without a tube takes a significant amount of weight off the wheelset. These wheels are lightweight as well as desirably stiff. Most names under this model tend to have low spoke counts compared to other brands. All all all, these features contribute to better lateral and torsional stiffness as well as increased resistance.

Some Ardennes wheels come in appealing colors as well (such as Ardennes Black). Looks aside, performance wise all deliver as promised. Parts are easily replaceable and repairable. The aluminum rear can be power washed and re-lubed without too much of a hassle. Also, the titanium shafts require little maintenance and are highly durable.

Some Ardennes models, like SL, sell like hot cakes. These wheels are quite versatile so you can easily choose the one you like. All Ardennes wheels sport the signature wider rims, so you can enjoy less resistance and more rolling area. Gathering top speeds is cake on these wheels.

+Pros:

  • Wider rims
  • Increased grip and comfort
  • Can handle gravelly terrain
  • Easy to repair

-Cons:

  • Brakes can be improved
  • Mostly suited for speeding only

The Verdict

If you want to get in on the wider rim craze, there is no better choice than HED Ardennes, the original wide rim wheelset. The design has been improved over the years, but the end result is the same.

If you want a versatile wheelset that is also easy to repair, you won’t find a better choice than this one.
