BMC Sportelite Review

When we received the BMC Sportelite for review, we were very pleased indeed at the weight. The bike weighs in at only 30lbs, which is pretty good for a hard tail cross country bike. This is owed in part to the aluminum frame.

The fork of the bike has 100mm of travel, which is pretty good considering the fact that this bike is classified as being completely entry level and is more cross country than a pure MTB. We also noticed a great groupset for beginners – the Shimano Alivio set, which is the perfect introductory set for mountain bikers everywhere.

While they aren’t the most durable, they provide great value for money. Since the gear ratio of this bike is 24/36, it was pretty easy to ride up the steeper climbs that we tested it on, although it did still need some level of effort to get it out there. This isn’t a bike that makes biking easier, but it does assist with making the transition into the sport much smoother.

+Pros:

  • Great frame design and material
  • Great amount of travel in the fork
  • Good group set
  • Affordable
  • Made for beginners

-Cons:

  • Wheels could have been bigger
  • Not the most durable

The Verdict
Best used by beginners, this mountain bike is a cross country model that is a joy to ride and learn the ropes on, although it won’t stand for too much abuse.

We had fun on the BMC Sportelite, although the ride could have been a lot more comfortable if the wheel size had been 29s or even 28s. However, the weight of the bike, handling and performance were all above par, which made for a great ride overall.
