This survey is intended to collect data on incidents of bicycle or bike component failure where the failure was (in the opinion of the rider) due to the cold weather, or which (again in the rider's opinion) would not have happened in summer conditions.
Please restrict incidents to those that happened in winter conditions, below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). Please don't post things like flat tires due to picking up a nail, unless that nail was buried in snow. We are interested in items that snap in the cold, batteries that freeze, shifters that cease to work etc. If it is a maintenance related items, such as frozen brake cables, report it the first time, then fix the problem. We are not interested in "Yup, Its Still Broke" sort of reports.
In other words, we want to collect failures that would occur only in ICEBIKING.
Remember, that this incident by itself may not be significant, but if hundreds of ICEBIKERS have the same problem we should arrive at a useable database of what to avoid. As such don't be shy about specifying brand names and models. This report will remain anonymous and results will only be released in aggregate.
What we plan to do with this Data:If we collect enough meaningful entries, we will produce tables of failure data for each type of component, sorted by various categories, (Brand Name, cause of failure, etc) which will allow ICEBIKERS to see if certain component types fail more often, and if certain brands fail more often. This being said, no one should be surprised if Shimano ends up at the top of the failed component list, they do after all, make more than anyone else. This data will be unique, in that there are sources of failure information on the Internet for bicycles in general, but none for winter cycling. To date, there have been |
