Shimano RS21 Review

One of the great things about the Shimano RS21 is that it really isn’t pretending to be anything that it is not. What you see is precisely what you get with this wheelset. This alloy rimmed wheelset is a durable option, especially suited to everyday use. It is compatible with 10 and 11-speed wheels.

Now the RS21 is a hefty wheelset which can be a bit of a drawback when trying to accelerate. Nonetheless, you will not have too much trouble picking up speed although it may be limited when compared to other models. There are plenty of good things to note about the Shimano RS21, including its rigidity and power transmission. This is largely courtesy of a wide flange hub with offset rim.

After riding around on this wheelset for a while, however, there was something that I found personally quite nice. This was the total durability of this wheelset. You really can put it through its paces and have it come out on the other side as good as new. The maintenance is also quite easy and not particularly extensive. Daily commuters may be especially appeased by a rim wear indicator. This keeps close track of how much your rim is wearing out so that you know when it is time to take action.

If you are not expecting anything spectacular, then you might find that the Shimano RS21 is just for you. However, since it is quite close in terms of price to the RS11, it does face some internal competition.

+Pros:

  • Low price
  • Good endurance
  • Easy to maintain
  • Reliable

-Cons:

  • Heavy
  • Best for commuting or training

The Verdict

The Shimano RS21 is good to use and abuse, especially when the weather is rough.

You will definitely be able to get full value for money with this wheelset.
