Merida Big Nine Review

The Merida Big Nine is a hardtail bike that is among the best when it comes to being affordable. We took a look at the Big Nine to see if it was worth the cheaper price. It makes use of a technoformed frame that feels a lot like a hydroformed one, although we saw that the tubes were a little thicker on the Big Nine.

In addition to this, the back of the bike actually has slots for mudguards and racks, which is a really good set on the bike. All of these are held together by a Suntour XCM fork that has 100mm of travel. While the bike was a budget setup, the transmission was actually a very nice nine-speed set instead of the typical low-cost 8 speed setup.

We soon realized during testing that this was a bike made for descending, and it was truly in its element on the down slopes. However, we also noticed that the bike was a lot slower to pick up speed because of the bigger wheels, although the top speed was pretty consistent throughout.

+Pros:

  • Extremely affordable
  • Fun ride
  • Performs well on descents
  • Good on climbs as well
  • Good transmission

-Cons:

  • Feels a little cheap

The Verdict

The Big Nine is true to its name of being an affordable bike for the common man. It is a great buy for a beginner, although enthusiasts may find it a little underwhelming.

We had a ton of fun on the Merida Big.Nine, and we found it very good in all areas, although the overall feel of the bike was a little too low-end for our discerning tastes.
