This site is the companion site to the ICEBIKE mailing list. The purpose
of the site is to have a single point for storing reference information about winter
cycling, to answer the questions of those just starting out, and provide the basics of
equipment selection, clothing choices, and to serve as a bulletin board of winter cycling
events.
There are no funds supporting this site, it's a labor of love, or
addiction as the case may be.
Further, nothing on this site is carved in stone or even sculpted in ice.
Based on input from others we will change our mind, revise our recommendations, and
recognize our differences. We don't know it all, we haven't done it all, and we haven't
been everywhere.
If you don't believe something you've seen here join the ICEBIKE Mailing list and ask a
question, make a point, or offer an opinion. You will not be hooted down, or chased away.
It's a friendly group. You can also Email the
Webmaster with your opinion or a suggestion.
ICEBIKE.COM and ICEBIKE.ORG are two internet domains that both
refer to this site.
This site was created because each year on the ICEBIKE
mailing list the same questions come up. Not that we don't like to talk about
ICEBIKING mind you, but sometimes the new ICEBIKER is better served by a collection of
knowledge that can be readily referred to when the need arises.
Now most mailing lists have a FAQ. The Frequently Asked Questions document becomes
large and unwieldy in no time. Further, it ends up being filtered
by the preferences of the FAQ maintainer. It also becomes someone's "property"
and the maintainer of the FAQ quickly gets into hot water over minor disagreements in
wording and opinions.
We wanted to avoid this, so we set up this site to hold the collected wisdom of the
winter cyclists. We have taken the following steps to make sure that we do not become
guilty of the same sin of filtering:
- We will include input of diverse opinions on our pages. We try to have more than one
opinion on each issue. Not because we like to stir up controversy, but because the earth
is a big place and what works in Winnipeg will totally suck in Wales. If you have an
alternate opinion to something you see on these pages, write it up and send it to us,
giving the URL of the page on which you think it belongs. If your argument is well
reasoned, regardless of if we agree with you or not, we will try to include it on the
page.
- If you would rather maintain your own web page, where you can spend as much time and
space as you think the subject warrants, just send us a URL of your page and tell us where
on the ICEBIKE site you think the link belongs.
- If you already have a ICEBIKE related site, send us that URL as well.
- We welcome links to your personal web pages as long as the are related to winter
cycling.
- We welcome links to commercial sites that have winter cycling supplies.
- No Advertising will appear on this site. We pay for the web space
out of pocket. Nobody is making any money off of this site
- Contributors may retain copyright to their input.
We realize that this latter point is not of much use, because once you
put something out on the web you can just about kiss your chances of selling it good by.
It does allow you to prevent others from selling it.
We have set up most of the off site links so that they fire up an additional web
browser window. This makes it easier to find your way back to the ICEBIKE site when you
surf on over to a linked site.
So does anyone actually READ this stuff? Check out the First Year Statistics.
E-mail submissions, or ideas and we will arrange
to include your input.
All work will be attributed to the proper author.
If it is un-attributed, it must be something I dreamed up.
