No box required.
In Amsterdam the check-in or Aeroflot was done by a KLM stewardess (read: airline where bicycle box required). I had checked it at the Aeroflot website, no box required. So the ground stewardess checked with the Aeroflot representative... "liability? nyet, no problem".
